Early house records (1984–1986) were typically minimal DJ tools, shaped by the practical needs of DJs working with vinyl. Can You Feel It stands out for subtly exceeding those constraints with a distinct sound and personality.

Can You Feel It is considered one of the founding tracks of Deep House. Its structure is economical, due to the constraints of Larry Heard's early recording equipment. Yet within that framework, Larry Heard introduces a level of warmth and emotional depth that was not typical of functional dance tracks. Later versions, especially those featuring the “My House” speech, would amplify the track’s cultural meaning, framing it as a manifesto for house music. However, the original instrumental has endured most strongly, because of its simplicity and character. This track is now considered a foundation of both deep house and lo-fi house.

Consciously or not, “Can You Feel It” exemplifies an early moment in which producers began to incorporate the depth and eclectic sensibility of the pre-house DJ scene into the constrained format of early vinyl production. This tendency would later be identified as “deep house,” but here it exists in a formative state. The track showed that house music could retain its functional role while also carrying emotional and musical depth.
